Fish and Chips in Whitby - Our Suggestions for 2016

Fish and Chips in Whitby - Our Suggestions for 2016

Whitby has had a long association with fish - having been a thriving fishing port for centuries. These days there aren't so many big trawlers leaving the harbour, but there are still plenty of smaller boats providing daily fishing trips for visitors and locals alike.

And of course, along with a rich fishing history, Whitby has become equally famous for its wonderful fish and chips, which can be enjoyed in restaurants, cafes and from takeaways around the town.

But, with so much choice, how do you decide where to go for your fish supper? Well, here are our top suggestions for 2016:

Sit Down Dining - Hadley's Fish and Chips

The original and the best - according to many! Hadley's have been serving quality fish and chips from Whitby's Bridge Street for over 80 years and continue to provide excellent food and friendly and efficient service.

This year they opened a takeaway ensuring that whatever the time of day and your culinary preferences, you can enjoy fish and chips from Hadley's.

Their restaurant can seat upto 120 and they're more than happy to take large group bookings, if you're travelling with lots of family or friends. But don't let the size put you off - Hadley's is a friendly and relaxed place, well furnished and with plenty of child-friendly space.

We're more than happy to recommend Hadley's for a sit-down meal, having enjoyed fish and chips in their upstairs dining room with our family only a few weeks ago!

Good Value Take-Away - Silver Street Fisheries

For a good value take-away on the west side of Whitby you can't beat Silver Street Fisheries. Not far from the Khyber Pass and the famous Whale Bones, Silver Street runs behind Skinner Street so it's easy to find your way to a scenic vantage point once you've collected your take-away!

If you've got small children, or want to share, the 'fish bits' is an excellent option!

Family-Friendly Town Centre Location - The Fish Box

If the weather's a bit grim or you really need somewhere to sit down for a few minutes and you're in Whitby's town centre, The Fish Box might be the chip shop for you. Opened a few years ago by one of Whitby's most well-established fish-frying-families The Fish Box is on Langbourne Road, opposite the Co-op.

They charge reasonable take-away prices, but have internal and external seating. It's nicely decorated, and makes a great choice for a budget meal, especially in the colder months.

Room With a View - Abbey Wharf

Abbey Wharf is what used to be 'The Shambles' in Whitby's Market Place, between Sandgate and Church Street. It underwent extensive renovations at the start of 2015 and is now one of Whitby's premier venues. The huge open-plan bar and restaurant area is comfortably furnished and always feels like a welcoming space. And the panoramic windows and doors which open onto the external balcony provide some of Whitby's finest views. Look across the River Esk to the other side of town, or look out of the harbour and see the fishing boats and pleasure boats navigating the waters between the Piers. It's a great spot!

You can opt to eat in, although it is at the pricey end of the spectrum. But they also provide take-away fish and chips throughout the day. So why not enjoy a refreshing drink on the balcony, before obtaining some delicious fish and chips and heading down to Tate Hill Sands, or onto the East Pier for a real taste of Whitby!

The Old Favourite - Trenchers

Trenchers continues to be a popular choice with visitors and locals alike. It's town centre location makes it difficult to miss, and they continue to serve take-away fish and chips as well as sit-down meals in the restaurant throughout the day.

Also, they have some of the poshest toilets in the country!

A trip to Whitby really isn't complete without at least one portion of Whitby's famous fish and chips. And wherever you choose to get yours from we're sure you'll be happy with the food and the friendly service you encounter! And please don't forget to tell us where you tried, and how good it was so we can tell others.

Enjoy your fish and chips - wherever you get them from and wherever you enjoy them!
